Upcycling: Save and Make money just by using items you already own

The United States is still dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic leaving the economy and millions of unemployed Americans still struggling as Summer whines down and Fall approaches.

Upcycling is a concept that both students and parents should consider during these uncertain times, not only to save money but to also help earn some extra money.

The concept of Upcycling is to give an item a “new life” and new purpose. This is different than the process of recycling which breaks down materials and uses them for new products, often of lesser quality.

Students all across the US are preparing for an academic year that is sure to be mentioned in future years and history books. While many states, school districts, & colleges have opted for a year of distance learning, there is an equal amount of schools that have opted to keep running on-site/campus learning for the year.

There is no need for new clothes that will only be seen through a webcam. In order to save money, upcycle old clothing by tie-dying, bleach dying, or cutting the material.

Many parents and companies are making work from home arrangements due to distance learning and to maintain social distancing as well.

The new work and school arrangements have caused an increased need for workspaces at home which have caused many retailers to sell out or consistently have limited quantities available to purchase.

Instead of purchasing completely new office furniture, save money by heading to antique/consignment stores or online retailers like eBay and OfferUp to purchase used furniture that only needs a coat of paint or vinyl adhesive for a new marble or granite looking desktop.

Upcycling items is not just beneficial to the customer, it is also beneficial to the sellers.

Companies like eBay, Poshmark, and OfferUp are sites/apps that host the reselling of items by regular everyday people to put money back in their pockets for items they no longer use.

Even if money isn’t a concern, upcycling projects (which are very similar to DIY projects) can be a great way to connect with family or friends, a way to escape from any stress, and most of all bring some fun & creativity to your day.
