The lack of diverse talent on and off-screen, inclusion and representation of the LGBTQ+ community, sexual misconduct, and equal pay have become social issues that POC, Women, the LGBTQ+ community as well as their allies are fighting to change within the Entertainment industry. While the pressure is on Hollywood to make swift changes, the entertainment industry is certainly not the first or only industry currently facing these injustices.
Lack of diversity, discrimination, sexual misconduct, and equal pay are all issues happening in the workplace of many industries around the World.
While steps to irradicate these problems by prominent celebrities and public figures on social media or in the press can be exciting, real change happens when employees of all levels and positions ban together to make a necessary difference in the workplace.
Carey Curry is no stranger to supporting current and potential colleagues in the workplace as a Talent Acquisition Partner. It is not only her job to find talented employees for companies but to also find the right companies for her talent.
“It is important that both the interviewee and the company are a good match. I encourage candidates to interview companies just as much as the companies interview them…to make sure they feel the company is a good match for them,” Ms. Curry says.
Curry possesses a master’s degree in Human Resources Management and is an advocate for employees knowing their rights and how to report any discrimination in the workplace. Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) laws are in place to make sure discrimination is never an issue in the workplace, which is why employers must visibly post for
Two resources highly suggested by Curry for reporting discrimination are a company’s Human Resource team and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) if an employee feels their HR Department isn’t taking appropriate actions.
Lack of diversity in the workplace is another social issue that many are trying to change, but it can be hard. Curry suggests being a leader in establishing a Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DE&I) task force to help create change in the workplace. The purpose of a DE&I task force is to be responsible for bringing ethical changes to a company in order to have a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment.
While Equal Employment Opportunity laws and DE&I task forces might not solve all workplace issues immediately, taking any steps (even baby steps) forward will eventually lead to a more positive and productive work environment.
